Kent County Council has launched the new Vocational Training Placements (KVTP) scheme. At a time when the social care sector nationally is working overtime to attract new blood into the workforce, Kent County Council is presenting hands-on opportunities to local youngsters with very promising results.

A joint initiative between KCC's Social Services and Education & Libraries departments, the KVTP scheme links up local schools with care sector services, tailoring opportunities to suit students' needs. The result is valuable practical skills that are complementing the curriculum, while opening up new horizons in terms of care sector careers.

KVTP project manager Maureen Robinson said: "I can't speak highly enough of the care staff we are working with. Their outlook and attention are transforming some of our young people. We have seen youngsters who may be going through a blip at school, rapidly finding a new sense of purpose. This scheme offers them a taster of the world of work and the chance to gain key skills while re-engaging them and often improving other areas of their school work at the same time."

KCC's Cabinet Member for Social Care and Community Health Peter Lake said: "The KVTP project is all about unlocking the hidden potential of our young people and is already proving to be an exciting catalyst for new opportunities in our schools and care facilities."
